There's a saying that stuck with me for years, I never knew it as being more true than I did about 8 or 9 months ago.
"We can never out work our nutrition"
Not bad huh? Sounds like it applies to folks that try and workout to be healthy versus developing a good nutrition base to be. It does I suppose, but it doesn't stop there!
Nutrition is the foundation of the quality of life we chose to live. It's the fuel that powers us. I won't get to deep here because I want you to spend a few moments and read what's below. The entire article is a bit long for what I generally like to post, so...Check out a few paragraphs that someone sent me today on my Twitter feed. It's a brief summary of my story.
We pick up with this...
In comes Rob. Through a mutual friend Rob contacts me and asks for a consultation to discuss his situation. The next day I am sitting across from him and as I hear his story I become excited in anticipation for the opportunity to work with him. In short, Rob suffered a traumatic brain injury. Through the injury his hormonal rhythms had been haywire, to counter this his lifestyle required lots of adrenal stimulation which results in a very intense way of living. Rob, a hard working man in a very intense line of work relied on that adrenal stimulation to function. Fast forward to retirement, in spring of 2015 Rob called it quits. When he did this his body did not adjust to the hormonal changes. Cortisol (stress hormone) was in flux, sleep hormone (melatonin) was lacking it seemed, and blood tests had shown his testosterone levels had fallen. Some of this is speculation, and only shown symptomatically, however all signs pointed towards adrenal fatigue and hormonal imbalance. When this began to happen Rob saw numerous doctors and got little to no answers. The only thing our western medicine professionals could offer is a hand full of pills and follow up appointments. One doctor even told him, due to the nature of the condition (blood pressures falling near 50% in the middle of his sleep), he should make sure his “affairs are in order” and appreciate every day as if it was his last. The modern medicine practices only go so far, if there is not something he can operate on or prescribe their hands become tied. Well, I can not operate or prescribe anything so needless to say, I was happy to help.
We immediately started on a workout regiment. The first day was not pretty – after fifteen minutes we had to call it quits as blood sugars dropped dramatically. We also gauged his blood pressure pre and post workout, and the fluctuation was extreme to say the least. I knew I had my work cut out for me and so did Rob. After pulling back on exercise intensity and making some other small adjustments we turned to nutrition. After a “sugar detox” of two weeks, in which carbohydrate intake was dropped to a near ketogenic level, we then
adjusted his carb intake based on his weekly exercise output. Focusing on healthy fats, moderate protein and cycling carbs depending on activity, we began to make serious progress. As the dietary habits improved the workouts followed suit. He began to power through every training session with an aggressive will that showed through puddles of sweat. His heart, lungs, and mind all working together like clockwork. Pounds began to fall off, he lost over 30 lbs and 10% body fat, blood pressures began to stabilize, and Rob began to sleep with the confidence that he would again wake, enjoying another day.
