JEEP LIFE AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS
"Not all those who wander are lost"
Solar is a great way to bring power to your adventure. Providing you don't under estimate the gear you want to run.
It's a great resource. It's clean, quiet, and refreshes itself every morning. So, let me share a few things I've learned in my own solar power build.
First, power for your dream project. If it's just a few lights, great. If you're looking for a few more amenities like refrigeration and heat, that's great too. Just be sure to have enough power, and that means panels and batteries! (I use a nice heavy duty marine battery to store power). After learning the lesson the hard way, I think there's nothing wrong with the over powering...unless you're packing this stuff around, then minimalist it is!
Because solar is an unknown for many, often we think more expensive must mean better. Actually, I found that most of these companies are using the same panels, the same designs, and collect solar energy the same. Each company packages their products slightly different though. What we're usually paying for are the electronics, connectors, the housings, all the things that deliver the power, not collect it. That is important, especially in reliability so keep that in mind when it comes to buying gear. No need to over pay if it isn't necessary, but you definitely don't want this stuff not to work either.
Lastly, and maybe most importantly, when you're out there on the next great adventure, you want to live it to the fullest. We have advanced so much in out technology, there simply no need to suffer through anymore. If you're backpacking, there's plenty of light weight solar gear to make your trip better. If you are hitting the trails with some Jeep buddies, spend some time and build your ultimate off road trailer. Think about the things that can make the ultimate base camp. Solar power opens up a whole new world to your fun. Take advantage of it...You won't regret it. Using our advancements to enjoy your time "off the grid" is just smart.
