JEEP LIFE AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS
"Not all those who wander are lost"
Tomorrow I turn 46! Where did the time go?? Well...who knows, who cares is what I say, because I'm right here, right now. The lesson I've probably learned most through the years is this...life is all about perspective. It really is, and not just in a things aren't necessarily what the seem sometimes kind of way either. Check this out...
Most folks dont don't know they don't know, ya know?? Ok, ok, what I mean is this, there are times when our reality is not necessarily actuality, so if we get our reality (perspective) aligned with truth...it becomes actuality. Think of it like this. The looking glass that we view the world through sometimes becomes foggy. That means our views on things becomes foggy too at times. If we take the time every day to clean our looking glass, the way we view things will be right. How do we make sure we are cleaning the looking glass?? We feed our bodies, our minds and our spirits healthy, positive things daily. Yes it is harder than it sounds, but worth every ounce of effort.
I may have learned this lesson a long time ago, but as I turn 46...it's more real and more important than ever!
This morning I woke up in my own bed and couldn't help but to ask myself...what's next?? I just got home from a long, dirty 3 days on the Mojave Trail with a great bunch of folks and it will probably take me at least that long to clean my Jeep, but...When the adventure bug bites, it changes you forever!
Adventure is a necessary part of our lives. When we don't seek adventure, we find ourselves doing all sorts of knuckleheaded and self destructive things. We look for distractions from our routine lives. We find ways to escape and express ourselves through behaviors aren't always leading us to healthy places. We need adventure, we need challenges and ways to feed our curiosity about the bigger picture here. It's only natural.
Dictionary.com defines adventure as an exciting or very unusual experience. So, the next time you crave adventure, skip the bar and take a pass on the over priced, unhealthy eating binge. Instead, try grabbing some friends and get outdoors for a while to see what's out there. You'll come back feeling refreshed, connected and ready to take on the world again.
"The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure" Christopher McCandless
If you think about it, The Walking Dead crew are the ultimate overlanders, right? Sure the setting isn't exactly ideal, but come on...you can't deny the greatness of Rick, Karl, Darrel and the rest of the crew. Obviously we hope the world never comes to that kind of chaos, but following this adventure has been quite the ride.
Check out this intense preview of the kick off of season 7, it is intense! Don't forget though...AMC, October 23rd...DON'T MISS IT!
The truth of it is that most folks that own a Jeep will never build out a $250,000 dollar rock crawler. They'll never install a 4 foot lift and 60 inch mudders just so they can go out back and drive through the mud for a while and they'll never drop the kind of cash it takes to create the ultimate self reliant overland machine. They will proudly own a Jeep though. They'll lift it a couple inches, throw on some bumpers and hit the local trails for a day of fun and relaxation with their loved ones. Well, TeraFlex has those folks covered too!
Bumpers are a must when it comes to toughening up your Jeep and giving it a personal touch of style. The TeraFlex JK Front Explorer with the hoop kit is designed for the folks that want to keep it simple. BUT...you can't very well make the front half of your Jeep the envy of your jeeper friends and leave the back half stock and mediocre can you?? Ok, ok, sure you can...but I know if you're like me you won't want to!

You can basically sum up the grab handle industry in two categories. Hard handles and soft handles. Soft handles usual strap to your roll bar, are made from nylon or paracord and will cost you less than 50 bucks for the pair. Your hard handles however are usually made from aluminum, all machines and finished off with either a powder coat or anodized. Hard handles usually cost anywhere from $100 bucks on up.
So...what should you look for in a "hard handle" if they are all similar? When grabbing a set for myself I went with three basic principles that I try and stick with whenever possible.
1. American made. If at all possible I will buy American made products. I don't mind paying more within reason and there's something great about pouring my cash back into American made products, American business ownership and the support of American jobs.
2. Customer satisfaction. I want to support a company that stands behind their products. A company that believes in customer service and a company that makes the customer experience something special, especially for the first time buyer.
3. Quality. Obviously the product has to be a quality product. Things like cheap hardware or bad packaging drive me crazy! Especially because it's just not the difficult or expensive to bring the best of that out in a product.
That leads me to ATP. American Trail Products. They have a great logo, some great looking products, they care about their quality, their customers and their price points. The owners were very nice and went over and above to make sure I was a happy customer...of course that means returning customer too!

Trail Hero 2016 is a great event with a full verity of runs. Mild to insane, there's something for everyone. One of my favorite things about it though is the beautiful backdrop. The Sand Hallow area is a blend of open red sand dunes and challenging rocky trails. The beautiful sunrises and even more beautiful sunsets will leave you in awe. Regardless of your participation level, the outdoor enthusiasts paradise is worth every minute of being there AND it's happening right now!! So...who's goin?
This past weekend the West Coast had its biggest expo of the year. The Lucas Oil Off-Road Expo at the Pomona Fairplex did not disappoint. All the favorites were there. From Rock Crawling to my favorite...Overlanding, all represented by the best in one spot! If you missed it...you missed out, but there's always next year!
